The young man depicted here was considered to resemble Pieter Ramp, the ensign in the right background of Frans Hals's Banquet of the Officers of the Saint Hadrian Civic Guard Company (Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem) of about Bode () was evidently the first scholar to connect the painting with the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke – Frans Hals (the Elder) (c. – 26 August ) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He is notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. Hals was also instrumental in the evolution of 17th century group portraiture.
